Cleaning And Maintaining Catit Drinking Fountain

Meuw has been using the Catit Fresh & Clear Drinking Fountain for more than a week now. I was initially reluctant to purchase this drinking fountain because of the amount of separate components it has. More design, more parts = more work to maintain and clean. However, I went ahead and got it anyway because of all the positive reviews I have read. I am a lazy person and I almost never read instruction manuals. Instead, I will do a search online for videos where I can just watch and follow. In this case, I tried my luck online but I couldn't find anything so I decided to make things easier for everyone who does not like to read instruction manuals like me!

It looks exactly like in the pictures posted on their website. Honestly pleasantly suprised that the water from the fountain never makes its way to the food bowl at all.

Firstly and most importantly, switch off the main power and plug the cord off.
TIP! The pump cannot operate without water and will be damaged if done so.

It comes with a tube that protects the cord from potential chewing from your cat. Slide the tube out and leave it aside. I do not wash this as it takes too long to dry. You can just wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Remove dome slowly.
TIP! Tilt it sideways to drain excess water on the surface before moving it to the sink to prevent puddles on the floor.

Bring the rest of the fountain to the sink, remove the pump and filter, then drain all excess water.

When dismantled, you should have 8 parts you need to wash.

Rinse the filter under running water and gently scrub the surface with your fingers to remove any debris/ fur that got caught on it.

Wash everything (except pump) with soapy water and rinse well.
TIP! Use a smooth, soft sponge to get to the edges. Using an abrasive sponge will scratch your fountain, since it is made of plastic.

Open the pump up in order to clean it thoroughly. It is very common to have grime buildup there without the knowledge of many owners. There are three parts to the pump (watch the video on a better idea of how to dismantle).
TIP! Use a cotton bud to reach very narrow areas. The pump cover is installed tightly so do not be afraid to use some strength to pull it open. The pump can be cleaned weekly or monthly.
Then, dry everything, refill the dome and fix them back up!
TIP! To ensure that you have an even flow of water over the dome when it is switched on, let the water run over the dome for about a minute and gently screw in the top (water/ flower looking cap). Otherwise, many have suggested massaging the water and spreading it across the dome with your fingertips. I have tried once and it worked but I do not like the idea of rubbing my fingers all over the water and contaminating it (even if I have washed my hands).
I do this cleaning and change of water every once in three days and each time it took about 10-15 minutes. So far, I have only washed the pump once and intend to do so every week. It is very important to clean your cat's drinking fountain regulary according to your schedule to maintain and prolong the life of it. It might seem troublesome but after doing it for a few times, it gets easier!
Have a great weekend (cleaning)! haha
